6 Lessons I Wish I Knew 3 Years Ago...

2024 marks my 3rd year of entrepreneurship. They were probably were the 3 hardest years of my life.

BUT it could have been a heck of a lot simpler, easier & more effective.

If I could travel back in time, these are...

6 Lessons I would Tell Myself When I Started My First Business

At 18 years old, I had no clue what it took to build a successful business.

Just thinking about it caused me stress...

It literally felt impossible, but I knew it was what I needed to do.

I had just started my first year at college studying actuarial science. I don't know what was the first "aha" moment when I realized college wasn't the route for me,

  • Hearing people with my degree say they hate their job
  • Finding zero fulfillment everyday I walked on campus
  • Accidentally making my college tuition in one day (I got DUMB lucky, I was far from being a business genius)

But I knew a change had to be made.

I had dropped out, started my first business (which failed, surprise surprise!), and proposed to my then girlfriend, now wife.
I was all in. Do or die.

It took me over 6 months to have any amount of success after my first lucky break to have another success in business, which was followed by another 8 months to have another success, before I was able to develop real growth with my company.

So what was the separation between starting with zero success...
To seeing the first signs of real & consistent growth 14 months later?

These are the X key lessons responsible:

1. Become addicted to learning

Early in my entrepreneurial journey, I didn't want to give any of my energy to learning anything.

I felt like spending any amount of time learning about anything was a waste of time because I wasn't spending my time actually building my business, acquiring new clients, and not increasing my earning.

But you have to take things in the right order.
The mentality of trying not to waste time was right though, I just acted on it in the wrong way.

I've found that listing to audio books in the morning or evening, while doing something that isn't very mentally active, such as running or walking, has been the most efficient way to learn daily while focusing my mind and body.

2. Be Levi, not Levi's business

Some of my first ads, posts & outreach messages are the most embarrassing things I've ever written.

Not just because I didn't know what I was talking about or because I had no copywriting experience,
But because I was trying to "act like a business".

I tried to write and act like what I thought a "serious & professional" company would write like, which wasn't true or genuine to my stage of business at that time.

Write with authenticity & genuineness.

3. Focus on consistency

Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, and underestimate what they can do in 5 years.

What you do every single day won't always be exceptionally exciting or make crazy progress.

Focus on building something, consistently with a long term mindset. Each day should be focused on getting 1% better.

Your efforts will compound over time.

4. Don't neglect your health

It's so easy to get into the "hustle" mentality, which too often will have you sacrificing:

  • Your diet
  • Your sleep
  • Your fitness
  • Your mental state

ALL of these are key if you want to be successful in any entrepreneurial venture, at least for the long run.

Health = Wealth

5. Focus on gratitude

I heard Tony Robbins say before that you can't be angry & upset, while expressing gratitude.

I used to think that (and a lot of what he teaches) was a load of crap.
When I finally decided to stop being a pessimist about it, I realized he was right.

Not only does practicing gratitude, and I don't just mean stating things your grateful for but REALLY experiencing the gratitude internally, not allow you to be angry and bitter, but its grounds your mind & perspective, eliminate imposter syndrome AND establishes an abundant mindset.

6. Become a storyteller

So much of my business, especially after I had established enough experience to know I had proven strategies and frameworks, was focused on KPIs and numbers.

You NEED the data to prove you can deliver...

But that alone will get you nowhere!
There is no impact or significance to it, and no matter how great your numbers are, it won't be enough to get customers & clients.

People buy with emotion and justify with logic.

Sell with stories, then validate with results.

There you have it.

These 6 lessons would have accelerated my business' growth & saved me days, weeks & months of stress & anxiety.

I can't teach all of life's lessons, so you will certainly learn other lessons the hard way,

But use these to your advantage, so you don't have to learn them the way I did, and watch you and your business exponentially grow!
