I clearly remember starting my first freelancing gigs & jobs with other agencies.

I had done a bunch of research on copywriting & design, feeling confident I was going to immediately start building up a huge portfolio of case studies,

And get my clients amazing results!

What?! How??

I was mortified to open the ads manager and see that micro-sized number looking back at me. (and my boss was furious)

There was a LOT to Facebook ads that no one had taught me that I didn't know yet.

Here are the principles that made the difference:

1. Media buying is ever-changing

Throughout my 3 years of launching, running, and managing ads, I’ve seen so many media buying strategies that have come and go.

Do super well for a few months.

Suddenly produces a negative ROAS.
Tons have gone down that route.

More and more we are seeing that Meta’s ability to deliver ads to people most likely to convert, Media buying is becoming less & less important.
(Which is why so many people are running ads broad)

2. Read ALL of the policy updates

Yes, I know how boring it is.

For business owners, it might be worth it to have an employee/contractor/agency that works for you be responsible for that because of how time-consuming it is.

BUT,

It will save you in the long run.

Meta’s auto-ban technology is aggressive and will ban anyone who even comes close to violating one policy and recovering a banned account is not fun.

Do yourself a favor and research to make sure that you are in the clear

3. The creative is 80% of the work

Like I said, media buying is becoming less and less important.

Targeting is no longer at the ad set level.
Rather in the creative.

Your creative must target your ideal customer with their greatest desire in a second.

Consistently testing new creatives will get you the highest ROAS ads possible.

4. Customer research is 80% of creative-making

While most of your time launching a campaign should be focused on making your creative,
Most of the time making that creative should be spent on customer research!

A creative that converts:

  • knows the target audience
  • knows what they want most
  • finds the offer that makes it impossible to say "no"

How do you get to those three key factors?
Customer research.

5. Test new creatives, weekly

I mentioned how important testing new creatives is, but most of you aren't testing enough...

It might sound frequent to test this often,
But I can GUARANTEE,

This is the minimum frequency for testing if you want to consistently stay profitable & scale.

The more creative your testing is,
The more long-term benefits you will get from trying new ideas.

6. Always have one campaign building your newsletter

I don’t care what industry you’re in,
What your niche is,
Or what your business model is.

Everyone should have a newsletter.

If you've joined mine already you know I have only launched mine recently.

After learning from Matt Gray that a newsletter is your only true “owned audience”
While a social media audience is only a “rented audience”

My perspectives on newsletters entirely changed.

Owning your audience allows you to, not only, monetize more efficiently,

But to also serve your audience even better.
